The primary components of this formulation typically include waxes (such as carnauba and microcrystalline wax), oils (such as castor oil and mineral oil), and a selection of pigments for color. The active ingredients include emollients and humectants such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and shea butter. Glycerin functions as a hygroscopic agent, effectively attracting moisture from the environment and aiding in the retention of hydration within the epidermis. Its mechanism of action allows for increased water content in the stratum corneum, thereby improving overall lip texture and appearance. Hyaluronic acid, a glycosaminoglycan, exhibits a high affinity for water (up to 1,000 times its weight) due to its disaccharide structure. When topically applied, it forms a viscous film on the skin's surface, enhancing occlusion and subsequently increasing skin hydration levels. Because of its ability to penetrate the outer layers of skin through facilitated diffusion, it has demonstrated enhanced bioavailability, resulting in an effective moisturizing action. Shea butter is a triglyceride derived from the nuts of the Vitellaria paradoxa tree and contributes to the lipid matrix of the epidermis, thus enhancing barrier function and reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
